Artist Statement

After reflecting on my work and the feedback I received during the critique, I have gotten a better understanding of myself as an artist. My medium is ceramics so having to try a new medium like digital art was extremely challenging to me and was difficult for me to wrap my head around it. Although it was something new, I had a fun experience trying to learn everything and create something that I was passionate about. 

At the beginning of the assignment, I had no idea what to make my zine about, however after contemplating for a few days, I decided on making my topic the top films that I love. My first obstacle after discovering my topic was how to make my zine original and not copy the films completely. I then decided to create my own scenes for each movie but still keeping it obvious enough for someone to detect which film it is. Overall, I believe I did an excellent job doing this so that it is my original work but the audience can tell what I am talking about. 

Next, the second challenge I came across was deciding how many films to do and also how to balance the photoshop as well as illustrator. However, after a discussion with the professor in class, I came to the decision to do 6 movies. One version of the movie in illustrator and the other in photoshop. I believe this gave it a balance between the two and allowed the zine to flow together. 

Lastly, although I was happy with the final product of my project, I would change one or two things. Firstly, I would have changed the way that I put the zines together. I used staples and although they are reliable, the way I folded my zine wasn’t helping the staple be strong. I had to staple it a certain way and felt that it made my zine look a bit less put together. Secondly, I would change the way I folded my zine. At first, it would’ve worked perfectly however I didn’t account for the front and back cover so it messed everything up and I had to adapt or else I would have to start my project all over. 

All in all, I enjoyed this first project and felt proud of my work because I discovered my love for digital art and would like to continue this journey.
