After the reading, I have a better understanding of what visual literacy is, specifically modern visual literacy. The reading states that in past years visual literacy was more about the ability of being able to make visual images in media. However, as time has passed, the definition of visual literacy has expanded into more specific aspects. A lot of this is due to digital media because it is more complex. Some of these aspects are visual thinking, image interpretation, media literacy, and more. With image interpretation, there needs to be the ability to be able to understand and interperet the meaning of images. Next visual thinking means being able to imagine things in a visual way, in other words, understanding images by thinking visually. Using visual information can be helpful with many things such as problem solving. Lastly, media literacy is a blend of visual and digital media and knowing that media is able to influence and eventually shape this. Furthermore, due to this, it is important to detect intentions, biases, or a push to a certain perspective. Visual literacy is also simply about creation and communication and these categories fall into the more broad idea. With this said, it can bring positive impacts such as including visual learning in everyday to exercise and master the skill of visual understanding. However, along with this new definition and positive influences, a negative side was also discovered. What the article explains is that there can be a downside to the access of so many images. Examples of this are fatigue or drainage which can damage our memory or understanding of things. Overall, it is evident that despite positive or negative impacts, visual literacy will continue to evolve and be a bigger part of our world. What is important is knowing how to adapt to these changes as they go and have a understanding to make it a more positive thing.
